Rowboats at Bois de Boulogne

March 23, 2008 at 2:00 pm (Nature, Things) (, , , , , )

It was far, far too cold on Sunday to think about renting a rowboat in the Lac Inferieur at Bois de Boulogne, but I just had to snap a picture as I passed.

Rowboats

What have I “learned” from Gallery Schmanz? I like boats, buildings, and the sky. I prefer close-ups. And I also like cats, but I don’t force them on you.

Galerie Vivienne

March 23, 2008 at 1:57 pm (Architecture, Places) (, , , , , , )

I know Elizabeth will be pleased to find this as a picture of the day because she loves Galerie Vivienne. We first found it when we were looking for the Bibliotheque Nationale so she could get a library card, and shortly after Elizabeth returned for a tour of the galleries and arcades peppered through the area. I agree with her though, that this is one of the most beautiful I’ve seen in Paris.

File under More Pictures of the Sky

March 21, 2008 at 1:52 pm (Architecture, Nature) (, , , , , )

But this is just a beautiful sunset with Notre Dame silhouetted in the foreground. I am really enjoying this time of year, when I’m walking home right as the sun is going down. The break in all the buildings means a clear view of the sky and a direct stream of sunlight onto Ile Saint Louis.

Sunset over Notre Dame

My brother and Megan tried to watch the sunset from Sacre Coeur at my (misguided) suggestion tonight, and instead the more glorious view was closer to home. Oops!

An abundance of flowers

March 20, 2008 at 1:39 pm (Places) (, , , , , , )

I like this adorable florist’s shop on Ile Saint Louis. I also like the black-and-white postcards on the wall to the right.

Also check out the fancy lettering over the awning that says “Fleuriste.”

And the heavens opened up…

March 19, 2008 at 10:41 pm (Nature) (, , , )

The sky above Notre Dame was stunning at sunset tonight.

Sunrays

I liked the visible rays of sunlight coming through the clouds. (Kind of made me think of Monty Python.)

These are the “grates” on the windows of the Musee Rodin. Fancy!

Rose-colored glass

March 16, 2008 at 7:43 pm (Architecture, Art) (, , , , )

The slightly-tinted glass in the windows of the Musee Carnavalet enhanced the view of its courtyard gardens.

I like the geometric patterns in the glass and gardens.

Ghosts on brick

March 14, 2008 at 9:22 pm (Signs) (, , , , , )

In Montmartre today, I photographed this brick wall with faded painted advertisements. The mural is too far gone to make out anything, but I imagine a sun in the center. What shadows of Paris’ past are on this wall?

Light for the Sun King

There’s opulence, and then there’s opulence. Versailles outdoes it all.

I enjoyed this view of the light chandelier against the intricate religious scenes above.

Reserved for prayer

March 12, 2008 at 11:14 pm (Architecture, Statues) (, , , , , , , )

When I stand inside a cathedral and think, “This place is a symbol of one man’s – or a hundred men’s – faith,” I am awed and humbled. Though I am not religious myself, I can certainly respect the devotion involved in creating such a masterpiece as Notre Dame Cathedral.

Stained glass Notre Dame

This chapel is reserved for prayer, but I appreciate its beauty even from my outsider’s perspective.
